I do not have evidence of this but I think Cheese Balls originated in the southern states as a cream cheese and cheddar cheese mixture formed into a ball covered with finely chopped nuts, usually pecans. However there are a wide variety of cheese balls that include meats and vegetables in the cheese mixture. The cheese ball is usually served with Ritz or Triscuit crackers.

These cheese balls are popular during the Christmas holidays, weddings and baby showers.
